Ungreen windpower: Sámi experiences and alternative visions
5 februari @ 10:00 – 11:30 Tjállegoahte, Stortorget 4, Jokkmokk

Welcome to an interactive panel session weaving together Sámi and local expertise, academic research, and artistic interventions. We highlight the consequences of today’s wind power expansion, compare with historical experiences of hydropower expansion and highlight visions of long-term sustainability.
Wind energy expansion is framed as critical for climate change mitigation, but it has multiple negative social, cultural, spiritual, health, economic and ecological effects. In its current form, wind energy expansion does not uphold the promises of the green transition and keeps us on a path of environmental degradation and human rights abuses, in a similar way to past hydropower developments.
You are invited to a creative exploration of these issues. We begin with diverse experiences and perspectives on the consequences of wind energy developments within the reindeer herding territories on the Swedish side of Sábme (and globally). Through discussion and creative interventions, we explore plural relationships with wind and water as kin to imagine together alternative visions for sustainable futures. Join us to share your stories and ideas for collective imagining.
Convened by the Powering Change with Justice project at the Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University and CEMFOR, Uppsala University in collaboration with the SING Sábme Project and ⴰⵔⵔⴰⵎⴰⵜ Ărramăt: Strengthening Health And Wellbeing Through Indigenous-Led Conservation and Sustainable Relationships With Biodiversity.
